David Koebel

David and Laura Koebel
David and Laura Koebel-2005

Meet your luthier!

David's luthier journey began at age 12, when he bought his first guitar and started taking lessons—igniting a lifelong passion for music. Throughout high school, he played in numerous bands, eventually going on to study music theory, composition, performance, and history at Music Tech in Minneapolis (later renamed McNally Smith College of Music). In 2005, in Sheboygan Falls, he and his wife Laura opened their own shop, fittingly naming it Roots Acoustic Music Company, a tribute to their families' deep roots in the area. In 2016, they moved the shop to Plymouth. The years of teaching lessons,  honing skills in instrument repair, and deepening his understanding of guitar construction naturally led David to start building instruments of his own—guitars he proudly played in his bands, Beef Tea, Dead Wood Chop, The Honeygoats and Ric Tic. David enjoys the creative challenges of repairs and finds inspiration in inventing new designs for his custom builds—each one a reflection of his musical journey and dedication to the craft.
